Am I an expert at every email platform? No. But I find a lot of similarities spill over from one platform to another.

For bigger brands, a full-scale email marketing operation often needs a list manager along with other professionals (copywriter, designer, etc) contributing either in-house or freelance.

But with the right setup, it generally works out pretty great.

Besides, email remains the BEST return-on-investment marketing channel with an average of $36 earned for every $1 spent.

So where do most brands go wrong?

4 common email mistakes I see (and suggest we focus on when working together):

❌ Going AWOL:

A surprising number of brands lose revenue simply from sending too few emails. This is often because either a) they worry they will annoy their subscribers or b) they haven’t got enough time or ideas to pump out new email angles.

A weekly send is always better than monthly. Daily is almost always better than 2-3 times weekly. Even twice daily is sometimes better than daily (to different segments).

❌ Too branded:

It’s become trendy to send image-heavy, templatized emails. They look pretty. But they often don’t convert as well.

Almost every time, I see “ugly” text-based emails with engaging copy outperform the design-heavy emails. I recommend testing, like with everything. But the 80/20 rule often applies to email marketing too.

❌ Lack of segmentation:

Email “blasts” may have their place now and then. But long-term list health is vital to make sure your email deliverability doesn’t tank and end up in spam.

Smart segmentation is what you want, using interest-based and engagement-based filters to send relevant emails to different segments of subscribers.

❌ Failing to repurpose:

Email shouldn’t exist in isolation. I’ve helped brands turn their best email campaigns into blog and social content (and vice versa) for multiple benefits.

In my experience, a high-clicking email that directs subscribers to a longer content-led sales page or kickass PDP is usually the golden ticket.
