Last Updated: March 10th 2024

You're an alternative health brand or professional who wants to grow online to attract more clients/customers.

You probably need a hand to create the kind of content that naturally attracts your target audience but in a way that's authentic and effective. Right?

And that can be the tricky part.

You want to position yourself as being different from mainstream medical treatment. However, you also have to address any reservations that your audience may have.

For people who may not have tried alternative or complementary medicine before, getting the balance right in your marketing is even more important...

So, as Google’s #1 ranked health and wellness copywriter, this is where I come in and do my copywriting thing!

Here are four reasons why you can feel confident choosing me as your alternative health copywriter.

Copywriting experience for alternative health & wellness brands

Do you intend to work with a copywriter who has no prior experience writing for alternative health businesses?

I doubt it!

Aromatherapy. Cookbooks. Health tech. Mindfulness. Supplements…

I've written copy to promote products and services related to all of the above.

Let me give you an idea of how I work as an alternative health copywriter, with the following examples…

Aroma Energy

Aroma Energy hired me as alternative health copywriter to write emails for their aromatherapy brand.

They are eBay's leading supplier of essential oils in the UK, with over 365,000 reviews and a 99.9% positive rating score.

The task was to market to their large email list, a total of 250,000 previous buyers at the time.

See below for screenshots of an email I wrote as part of their marketing plan.

This particular email generated a 26.59% open rate and 2.35% click-through rate, which is above the average of 15.68% open rate and 2.01% click-through rate in the rest of the e-commerce sector, according to Mailchimp.

Their new set of summer oils received a welcome increase in sales as a result of the emails.

Life Happens Mindfulness

Dr. Cheryl Rezek at Life Happens Mindfulness needed some help with creating lead magnets for a mindfulness event she was speaking at in London.

Together, we discussed potential marketing angles.

She liked my idea of providing event attendees with a quiz and 28-day mindfulness calendar to introduce people to her brand.

Dr. Rezek reported that the calendar and quiz were very well received at the event, and she was kind enough to offer a testimonial following the work.

“Declan has been unfailing in his willingness to work at a high standard, deliver on time and show commitment and creativity.

Having worked with him over a number of years on varying types of projects, he has been consistently willing, engaged and eager, no matter how many times I’ve changed my mind or asked for more work. I have no hesitation in recommending him.’’

Utiva Health

I got in touch with Utiva Health, a UTI prevention brand in Canada, to suggest we could update their web copy.

I felt that they could improve the number of conversions on their subscription form.

Utiva's team applied my copywriting proposal to good effect.

I used the ABC (Audience—Benefit—Curiosity) approach to write a more intriguing, audience-specific, and benefit-driven signup prompt.

Personal experience with alternative medicine for chronic illness

Okay.

This is a bit of a personal story but it's a big part of why I'm so passionate about being an alternative health copywriter.

I got sick in 2017. Real sick.

Nobody knew what was going on.

Random symptoms gradually appeared in the past year but I had been able to manage (and hide them) well enough until then.

I could still work, drive, date, climb mountains, and so forth.

Then, in the summer of 2017 before I was set to start my doctorate in Clinical Psychology, everything crumbled.

I'd been so determined to get going with the doctorate that I'd tried to ignore my worsening health.

Alas, it didn't work for long.

After several misdiagnoses, I found out I had Lyme disease.

As I'd apparently had these nasty infections in my system for several years, they were going to be harder to beat.

Long story short:

I lost my then dream career, could no longer run or play football, and could barely string sentences together on some days.

I spent many days practically bed-bound and in a ton of pain. Rough stuff.

The next 2-3 years were a hell of a ride.

Good phases, bad phases, very bad phases.

Me receiving alternative medicine treatment.

Me receiving alternative medicine treatment.

Without alternative medicine, I'm not sure I'd still be here today.

And if I was still around, I'd have been in terrible shape.

The reality was, mainstream medical treatments couldn't save me.

Me and my family were left to figure it out on our own.

Fortunately, we had some savings. Otherwise, we'd have been screwed, to be honest.

Now, did all of the alternative health approaches we tried to get me better actually work?

No, they didn't.

But many did help. Overall, I've been left with a positive view of alternative medicine as a field in general.

Over time, the condition has become much more manageable.

I'm able to work remotely, go for walks every day, socialize, cook, etc.

I still have to make certain lifestyle changes but have made a ton of progress.

Some of the alternative and complementary medicine treatments I've tried along the way:

  • Acupuncture

  • Chiropractic

  • Fasting

  • Herbalism

  • Hypnosis

  • Magnetic therapy

  • Meditation

  • Naturopathy

  • Nutritional therapy

  • Ozone therapy

  • SOT

  • Tai chi

  • Yoga

I wouldn't wish the experience I've had with chronic illness on my worst enemy (if I had one!)

But what the tough years have given me is understanding.

When I write copy for the alternative health market, I try to put myself in the customer's shoes.

What are their pains and frustrations? Their fears?

How can we, as a brand, speak to them?

To gain their trust and give them hope without being ''salesy''?

By figuring out the above, we give your brand a much better chance of resonating with your audience.

Actually practise what I write about!

I don't just write for brands in the alternative health industry.

I actually like to try new strategies and therapies myself.

There are two reasons for this…

Firstly, if I think that a certain approach could benefit my well-being, then I'm curious to give it a go!

As a result of this, several "experiments" have become long-term habits over time.

Secondly, I'm better placed as an alternative health copywriter if I have an understanding of how health interventions can impact people in real life.

Here are a few approaches that I'm a particular fan of:

  • Daily meditative practice

  • Herbs

  • Intermittent fasting (16:8)

  • Low-carb eating

  • Supplements

  • Yoga

I'm always open to learning new methods, so if you think that we could be suited to working together, I'd love to find out what some of your favorite tools are.

Professional background working in healthcare

Before I transitioned to become a health copywriter, my work was primarily within the healthcare field.

This can benefit your brand because I worked for many years with the kinds of client groups who may be interested in your products or services.

People with chronic health needs including anxiety, depression, skin disorders, and family carers experiencing burnout.

Many individuals with these health needs feel let down by mainstream medicine.

They feel lost, frustrated, and in need of support.

I met a lot of people in the mental health services I worked for who, unfortunately, were in desperate situations.

Either they were very sick or their loved one was.

High-quality alternative health products are well-positioned to serve these types of client groups.

But there are two things to get right...

  1. Have a genuinely great product/service that offers value to your customers

  2. Communicate this value to the world with clarity and encouragement.

Essentially, point 2) covers how you can "sell without selling," so to speak…

Nobody wants to feel like they're being sold to.

They want to feel understood and in control of the buying process.

Just like you and I do when we're looking to improve our health.

Alternative medicine clinics have to cater to both the logical and emotional needs of their target audience.

Logical = Is your product/service practical for the customer to access? Is it cost-effective?

Emotional = Does your product/service remedy a deep fear or frustration for your customer? Can it offer hope or help them fulfill a dream?

An alternative health copywriter will help you get clear on the above and make sure your brand's messaging is caring, creative, and consistent.
